Oldest House in
the Area.!!!
Simon Carson, Jr. married Martha Williams in the fall of 1791 and settled
on a farm given to them by Elisha Williams. They named the farm "Pleasant
Green". Their manor house , built in 1780, of gray stone still stands today.
Years later, Simon Carson's son, James Harvey Carson, Confederate Army General expanded
the home. General James Carson lived in the house, at the time of the Civil War, and is
said to have had a special drawer, for his bottle, in the wall of the bookshelves in the
living room. General James Harvey Carson, was active at Harpers Ferry and Winchester in
the early days of thewar, as a commander of the militia. It is believed that he
accompanied General Jackson on the Romney Campaign in 1862. In the field beside the house,
a small family cemetery contains the graves of the Carson family. Simon, and his wife,
Martha, as well as General James Carson, their son, and daughter-in-law, Catherine, and
their four children.

This paneled wall in Pleasant Green Gardens, is an example of a highly decorated interior
that dates to the 1780's. Some of the trim inside may date to the early 1780's and
illustrates the type of woodwork found in the dwellings of the affluent. This
hall-parlor-plan house features a paneled wall in the parlor that is surprinsingly
sophisticated and elegant for a house with a relatively plain exterior. Centered along the
wall is a mantel with Doric-inspired capitals and an eared overmantel. On each side of the
chimney are four-in cupboards divided by fluted full-height pilasters. The paneled wall is
topped with an intricately carved denticulated cornice. In contrast, the less formal hall
has cruder woodwork limited to a paneled mantel and a boxed staircase. (Maral S. Kalbian,
pg19-20). (This is the living room for your enjoyment )

The gardens at Pleasant Green Gardens include several rose gardens, a pond, walking
garden, and overall breathtaking landscaping with a back drop of the Blue Ridge Mountains.
